The Girl With The Tattoos And The Streaked Hair From A Bottle hasn't been at the bar lately. I don't think it's because she found a job: we would've heard the good news. She would've come in to celebrate. No, I think it is probably the lack of money that comes from being out of work. Maybe depression, too. A lack of money and depression often are travel partners. And they sleep on your couch.

As I had mentioned previously, she quit her last job because her ex-boss was pressuring her to have sex with him. The Woman With The Smart Wardrobe has mentioned before that she has had bosses making coarse invitations to her; she is the type to tell someone firmly to Fuck Off. She does not see a need for candy-coating, which is refreshing: it can't always be candy.

Of course, when you work in a job with a Human Resources Department there are options in handling such situations: there is back-up, there is a threat to the assholes. Bars generally don't have HR Departments; much of the time the boss is the owner. All roads lead to Rome, and your problem is with the chief Roman.

The smaller the business the less protections are available. We hear about the sexual harassment of the Rich and Famous, and that is sad; but sexual harassment when you are Poor and a Nobody -- that is sadder. Meanwhile, The Girl With The Tattoos And The Streaked Hair From A Bottle is probably at home, eating Top Ramen and watching a Comfort Movie she has seen many times before. 

And she is probably sleeping on the couch. 

Because sometimes getting to bed in the bedroom just seems like too much effort.

I am hazy about how it started; alcohol was probably involved. I would walk past a group of heroin kids outside what was, at the time, the Big 5 Sporting Goods store. David Foster Wallace had a collection of short stories entitled "Brief Interviews with Hideous Men"; at times, this seems like a perfectly reasonable title for conversations that happen with some people at the bar. Maybe not truly hideous; I could check a thesaurus for a synonym that seems somewhat lighter, but it is just easier to say I could check a thesaurus for a synonym that seems somewhat lighter, and you'll know what I mean. I have mentioned the broken men before, and those that instill distaste.They are usually obvious as losers: poor posture, poor bodies, questionable hygiene, enervated, isolated. The guys who were trying to f**k her didn't even buy her a drink: there really are useless people in this world.

I ran off to do some errands -- sometimes there is life that needs to be conducted outside of the bar -- and when I returned the girl with the tattoos and the streaked hair from a bottle who just quit her job was still there. She can hold her alcohol, but she now has had more alcohol than she could reasonably hold. The unseemly part of bar life is now happening: most of the regulars have left, and a few young men are around her, commiserating. That is, they are commiserating with her in the hopes that being the commiserating guy will get her to drunkenly go home with them and fuck. Hyenas. I usually keep a distance to people's dramas: you can't make everyone make a good decision. But I cannot let this happen.
