I hate that sleazy side of dive bars.

There is a young woman who occasionally comes into the bar, she is a bartender at a dive bar near downtown. Yes, she has tattoos. Streaked hair from a bottle. Still very cute.

One afternoon she alluded to her boss wanting to have sex with her, for which she would get more and better shifts. Heads shook in commiseration.

I hate that sleazy side of dive bars.

She won't have sex with him, and is looking around for another job.

Dive Bar Boss: guys LIKE the cute bartender girls with tattoos and streaked hair from a bottle. You should give her more and better shifts because it will be good for your business.

Unrequited lust buys a lot of drinks.

There is a man who comes by the bar infrequently; mid-sixties, keeps to himself. I have spoken with him a few times, but he is not the talkative kind. If the killer is white, that is better. If the killer is from the South: better yet.

There is a guy at the bar who is extremely sensitive to news about terrorist attacks when immigrants are involved. His sensitivity is heightened further if the terrorist is a Muslim. Because he is gay. With a Muslim boyfriend. He does not want to see his boyfriend subjected to hate. As such, people tiptoe around him when a terrorist act has just occurred. But obviously, it is an elephant in the room. So the elephant is carefully ignored, and people mostly talk about sports when he is around. Of course, the sports world has elephants of its own. Players kneeling, being one example. Because now you are talking about racism, not sports. Sometimes there are a lot of elephants in the bar. However, the guy at the bar with the Muslim boyfriend has become more outspoken about this of late. There is a lot of hate, he says: a lot of Americans are homophobic immigrant Muslim haters. For some reason I also picked up several two-packs of hard-boiled eggs from the refrigerated section.

I am hazy about how it started; alcohol was probably involved. I would walk past a group of heroin kids outside what was, at the time, the Big 5 Sporting Goods store. They typically had a cardboard sign on the sidewalk, asking for money. Sometimes the writing on the cardboard attempted to be clever, or funny, or appeal to emotion, with the occasional decorative squiggly lines or smiley face; sometimes it just simply asked. I was at the Bartell's Drugs on the corner, picking up a few items, of which I cannot remember. For some reason I also picked up several two-packs of hard-boiled eggs from the refrigerated section. Outside the store, as I approached the heroin kids, I took the eggs out of the bag, and then gave the packages to them. They were a bit baffled, but appreciative.
